Closing the Gap: Penfield Launches Neuropsychological Assessment Program for Young Children

Families across Milwaukee are facing a growing challenge: long wait times for developmental and autism evaluations, often stretching 9 to 12 months. For parents seeking answers, these delays can be overwhelming and can prevent children from accessing the therapies they need during the most critical years of development, a time of rapid brain growth when early intervention has the greatest impact on a child’s health, learning, and long term outcomes.

At Penfield Children’s Center, we believe no child should have to wait for the care they need.

That’s why we are proud to introduce our new Neuropsychological Assessment and Testing Program, designed specifically for children ages 0–6.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

The early years of life are when the brain is developing most rapidly. Identifying and addressing challenges during this window can significantly improve outcomes.

Early diagnosis helps children:

  • Build communication and social skills
  • Strengthen emotional development
  • Succeed in school and beyond

It also empowers families with the knowledge and tools they need to advocate for and support their child.

Addressing a Critical Need

Without a diagnosis, many children are unable to begin essential early intervention services. These delays can impact everything from communication and behavior to school readiness and long-term development.

Penfield’s new program was created to address this urgent gap—providing families with timely, comprehensive evaluations and clear next steps forward.

This initiative expands access to early diagnostic services for children with suspected neurodivergent conditions, including:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Developmental delays
  • Behavioral and emotional challenges

By reducing wait times and increasing access, Penfield is helping families get answers sooner—and start support earlier.

What the Program Offers

The Neuropsychological Assessment and Testing Program provides a full range of evaluations tailored specifically to early childhood.

Services include:

  • Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations
  • Developmental and cognitive testing
  • Behavioral assessments
  • Diagnostic clarification
  • Individualized treatment recommendations

Each evaluation is designed to give families a deeper understanding of their child’s unique strengths and needs—paired with actionable guidance for next steps.

Designed for Young Children

Unlike traditional hospital-based models, Penfield’s assessments take place in a child-friendly, developmentally appropriate environment.

Evaluations are conducted on-site at Penfield Children’s Center in dedicated assessment spaces designed to help children feel safe, comfortable, and engaged.

This approach allows clinicians to observe children more naturally—leading to more accurate, meaningful results while reducing stress for both children and caregivers.

A Pathway to Ongoing Support

At Penfield, diagnosis is just the beginning.

The Neuropsychological Assessment and Testing Program serves as an entry point into a broader continuum of care. Once families receive answers, they can seamlessly connect to additional services, including:

This coordinated approach ensures families don’t just receive a diagnosis—they receive a clear path forward.

A Commitment to Early Intervention

The launch of this program reflects Penfield’s ongoing commitment to ensuring children have positive early experiences from pregnancy through age five—when the foundation for lifelong development is built.

By expanding access to timely, high-quality evaluations, Penfield is helping more children get the support they need—when it matters most.
