Inspiring Growth Through Art and Music: A New Partnership with Alverno College

This spring marked the beginning of a meaningful new collaboration between Penfield Children’s Center and Alverno College, bringing art and music therapy directly into our Green and Gold classrooms. Designed as a 12-week program, this initiative supports children ages 3–5 from a wide range of cognitive, physical, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds—meeting them where they are and helping them grow through creative expression.

Led by Alverno students in the Art therapy and Music Therapy programs alongside a clinical supervisor, these weekly sessions are intentionally structured to align with key developmental milestones. Through hands-on art making and music-based experiences, children build essential skills in communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, and physical development.

Each session is more than just creative play—it is guided with purpose. Children are encouraged to strengthen fine and gross motor skills, practice social interactions, and explore self-expression in a supportive environment. Facilitators model and reinforce healthy communication, helping children learn how to navigate relationships, express emotions, and build confidence. By working with limited materials and engaging in open-ended exploration, participants also develop self-regulation and problem-solving skills.

This partnership not only benefits the children in our classrooms, but also provides invaluable, real-world clinical experience for Alverno students as they prepare for careers in therapeutic services.

The program is made possible through the generous support of the Herzfeld Foundation, whose commitment to high-quality early childhood education and expanded access to arts-based learning opportunities aligns closely with this work. Research continues to show that early childhood is a critical period for brain development, and initiatives like this help lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning and well-being.

Following a successful first semester, we are excited to continue the program this fall with a new group of Alverno clinical students. Together, we are fostering creativity, connection, and growth—one child at a time.
