Better Together: Highlights from Penfield’s All Staff Retreat
This October, the entire Penfield Children’s Center team came together for our annual All Staff Retreat — a rare and wonderful opportunity for everyone, from every department, to connect in person. The day was filled with energy, laughter, and reflection, reminding us just how special it is to be part of a team united by one mission: helping children and families reach their full potential.
Learning from Each Other: The Department Exhibit Hall
The day began with our Department Exhibit Hall, where every Penfield department created a station to showcase their work. From early education and therapy services to family programs, administration, and facilities, each group shared insights into how they support Penfield’s mission. Staff had the chance to walk around, ask questions, and learn more about how all the pieces of our organization fit together to create meaningful impact for the children and families we serve.
This part of the day was both educational and energizing, sparking a deeper appreciation for the incredible teamwork that makes Penfield such a special place.

Wellness and Rejuvenation
After a morning of learning and connection, staff took time to recharge with a series of wellness sessions. Participants rotated through options including yoga, meditation, and a sound bath — each designed to help quiet the mind and restore focus.
These sessions served as a reminder of the importance of self-care, not just for ourselves but for the children and families we support. Taking time to pause, breathe, and reflect helps us return to our work with renewed energy and compassion.

Teamwork in Action: The Build-A-Bike Challenge
After lunch, the energy shifted from calm to electric as staff gathered for a fun, fast-paced Build-A-Bike challenge. Employees were divided into 14 teams and tasked with coming up with a team name and a song, chant, or cheer to perform in front of the group. The room filled with laughter and applause as each team showcased their creativity and spirit.
Once the performances wrapped up, the real challenge began. Teams had to work together to solve a series of puzzles and riddles — earning the tools they’d need to build their bikes. Collaboration, problem-solving, and communication were key, and it was inspiring to see how each group’s unique personality and teamwork shone through.
By the end of the activity, 14 brand-new children’s bikes stood proudly assembled — ready to be gifted to Penfield families during this year’s annual holiday party. It was a powerful reminder that when we come together, we can accomplish incredible things.

Celebrating Milestones
The day concluded with a celebration honoring Penfield staff members marking anniversaries, from one year to multiple decades of service. Each recognition highlighted the dedication and passion of the people who make Penfield’s mission possible every day.
These moments of gratitude underscored one of Penfield’s most cherished core values — that we are truly better together.
A Heartfelt Thank You
The 2025 All Staff Retreat was a day of connection, relaxation, and celebration. We left feeling inspired, appreciated, and reminded of the joy that comes from working alongside such dedicated colleagues.
A big thank you goes to Dawn Strzok, Executive Assistant, for her incredible work in planning and organizing the day’s events. Her attention to detail and creativity made the retreat both meaningful and memorable for all.
At Penfield, we know that caring for one another helps us care even better for the children and families we serve — and that’s something worth celebrating every day.
