Fall is one of the best seasons for fun family activities. It may be getting chillier outside, but there is plenty of warmth to be found in bright orange autumn leaves, bonfires and fresh-from-the-oven pumpkin pie. Have some fun with your family this fall with all of these autumn-related activities!
Seasonal Activities: Autumn
- Go Apple-picking at a local orchard. Later, let the kids help you make homemade apple pie or caramel-dipped apples with your pickings.
- Get lost in a corn maze, and have your children help you navigate the way out.
- Go for a fun fall hayride at a farm.
- Rake up giant piles of leaves in your backyard and let your kids jump around in them.
- Grab some marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate (or peanut butter cups!) and make s’mores by a bonfire before it gets too chilly outside.
- Take an autumn nature walk through the colorful woods and collect the prettiest leaves you can find with a prize waiting for the one who finds the best leaf. You can also create a woodsy scavenger hunt and search for items like yellow leaves, acorns or roly poly caterpillars.
- It’s football season and there’s no better time for you the get your little linebackers outside for a game. Get some neighbors or relatives together for a friendly game of touch football. Your kids will love engaging with the other children and feeling tough enough to be playing with the adults.
Halloween:
- Let your youngsters pick out their own pumpkin at the pumpkin patch. Find fun faces online and print them out to help your kids carve their own jack-o-lanterns! Here are just a few fun pumpkin patterns: http://www.rd.com/slideshows/pumpkin-carving-patterns-ideas/#slideshow=slide. When you’re done carving, be sure to roast the pumpkin seeds!
- Watch a Halloween movie together as a family – but nothing too scary! Some kid-friendly Halloween movies include Casper the Friendly Ghost, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Haunted Mansion, Halloweentown, and Hocus Pocus.
- Make some spooky treats together, like graveyard cupcakes or eyeball punch! Recipes here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/photos/spooky-halloween-recipes-for-kids.html
- Get crafty, and let your kids design and create their own trick-or-treat bag.
Thanksgiving:
- Let your youngsters help out around the kitchen while preparing the Thanksgiving feast. Whether it is mashing up potatoes or putting whipped cream on the pumpkin pie, make sure they have a role to play.
- Be sure to remind your children the true meaning of the holiday. Before eating dinner, have your family members say something that they were thankful for that year.
- Get into the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday and add festivity to your dinner table at the same time when you make turkey place mats! Instructions here: http://fun.familyeducation.com/thanksgiving/crafts/47198.html
