Celebrating Black History Month at Penfield

Throughout February, our classrooms have been filled with creativity, learning, and meaningful conversations as we celebrated Black History Month at Penfield. Our children explored history through hands-on crafts, read books highlighting influential Black Americans, and helped decorate our hallways with interactive bulletin boards inviting everyone to guess the famous figures being featured.

These activities are more than art projects — they are opportunities for children to learn about different cultures, backgrounds, and contributions that have shaped our world. Representation matters, especially in early childhood. When children see people who look like them reflected in stories, history, and leadership, it fosters pride, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging. At the same time, all children benefit from learning about diverse experiences and perspectives, building empathy and understanding from an early age.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teaching and family engagement staff for planning such engaging crafts and activities and for transforming our building into a vibrant celebration of Black history. Your intentionality and care help create an inclusive environment where every child feels seen, valued, and inspired.
