Adaptive Toy Program Trip Recap: Manila, Philippines

In 2024, Vladimir Bjelic, a Speech-Language Pathologist at Penfield Children’s Center, had the incredible opportunity to travel to Manila, Philippines, representing Penfield and the Inclusive Play: Toys for All project. Accompanied by the Marquette University Engineering Department, Vladimir embarked on a journey filled with enriching experiences and profound insights.

Hospital Visits and Observations

Vladimir spent several days at the Philippine General Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Manila, observing the dedicated but resource-limited work of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other healthcare professionals. The hospitals faced significant challenges such as overcrowded rooms, lack of air conditioning, and financial constraints that limited therapy sessions. Despite these hurdles, the healthcare professionals demonstrated remarkable knowledge and resourcefulness, making the best of what they had.

Presentations and Hands-On Sessions

Vladimir conducted presentations on Inclusive Play, AAC, and early intervention feeding, engaging the staff with hands-on sessions using adaptive toys. The demonstrations were well-received, and the staff’s eagerness to learn and improve their practices was heartwarming. Vladimir also worked directly with young patients, showcasing alternative positioning techniques and the benefits of adaptive toys.

Collaborations and Community Engagement

Meeting with Teresita G. Inciong, Vice-Chairperson and Executive Director of the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Council, Vladimir discussed the state of early intervention in the Philippines. Teresita expressed a desire for ongoing education for teachers and professionals, and plans were made to explore including Penfield and Marquette University in future Early Intervention conferences in Asia.

Reflections and Gratitude

This journey highlighted the dedication and creativity of Filipino healthcare professionals, who do so much with limited resources. Their gratitude and respect were humbling, as was the realization of the stark contrasts in resources between our countries. Vladimir returned home with a deeper appreciation for the resources available at Penfield and a renewed commitment to lead with love, kindness, and respect.

Vladimir is profoundly grateful to his colleagues, Penfield Children’s Center, Marquette University, and everyone involved in this journey. This trip has inspired him to strive continually to be a better person, therapist, and advocate for children, always leading with love.
