YEAR IN REVIEW

2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

Since our agency’s inception in 1967, Penfield Children’s Center has become a leader in early education and health services for children who face the most significant physical and emotional challenges. Our children reach age-appropriate milestones and our families are encouraged to envision exciting futures for their children.

In 2015, our staff served 1,563 children. We increased school-readiness, reduced high-risk behaviors, improved the health of those served and worked to ensure vulnerable children received the high-quality health care, developmental support and academic instruction necessary for success. Furthermore, Penfield provided parental programming and support to help families thrive.

While this year marked a period of tremendous growth, we also began a journey returning to our Montessori roots by initiating the process of opening Penfield Montessori Academy – a school for children of all abilities. We will welcome our first class of K3, K4 and K5 students when Penfield Montessori opens its doors on September 6, 2016. Penfield Children’s Center and Penfield Montessori Academy will work together to ensure the educational, health and wellness and family support structures are in place for each student who walks through our doors. Together, we will create a pathway to a full and healthy life by maximizing the individual potential of each and every child. Thank you for your support! With your help, we continue to meet the needs of our community and provide hope for a brighter future.

Sincerely,

OUR PROGRAMS

EARLY EDUCATION & CARE

In 2015 the Early Education and Care Program served 178 children, 54 with special needs. As a result, 100% of the children in our program displayed improvement in their development.

At 20 weeks gestation, Violet was diagnosed with Encephalocele, a rare neural tube defect that caused her skull to not fully close and her brain to protrude from the opening. She was given a 55% chance of survival, but Violet beat the odds and underwent her first surgery at just 8 hours after birth. At 3 months, Violet was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus and had surgery to insert a Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. This helped to regulate the excess spinal fluid that was collecting in her skull. Just 2 weeks later, she had her final cranial surgery to repair the opening in her skull.

“Seeing my little girl go through so much at such a young age was almost unbearable. I would have done anything to help her,” said Violet’s mom, Sara. “Vi is such a fighter. She has recuperated from every surgery very quickly and is such a positive, happy girl.”

As time progressed, Violet grew from a fragile baby into a strong and independent toddler. At 2 ½ years old, Sara and her husband, Jonathan enrolled their daughter at Penfield Children’s Center. Violet received Birth-to-Three services through Milwaukee County at Penfield, including special education, occupational, physical and speech therapies. She also worked with the Behavior Clinic which helped her manage her frustrations and develop a better relationship with her brother. Since coming to Penfield, Violet has learned to walk, control her emotions and communicate.

While she is still met with a variety of challenges on a daily basis, including working through a vision impairment and hearing sensitivity, Violet continues to be a fun-loving 4-year-old. She enjoys music, playing outside, and engaging in art classes.

“Violet is so outgoing and driven. There is nothing that she can’t do and this pushes all of us to be better, work harder, and laugh more. She is an inspiration and it’s hard not to notice her and smile when she enters the room,” said Sara. “She is a tremendous gift and I can’t imagine our family any other way.”

OUR PROGRAMS

EARLY HEAD START

Penfield Children’s Center offers Early Head Start in partnership with Acelero, a national provider of early childhood education and family engagement services in Milwaukee County. Early Head Start is a year-round, family centered program for infants and toddlers. The program provides comprehensive child development and family support services including educational, health, nutritional, behavioral and family services which enhance the development of participating children.

OUR PROGRAMS

MKE COUNTY BIRTH-TO-THREE PROGRAM

  • 98.53% of children demonstrated improvements in communication and development of motor and cognitive skills.
  • After participating in the program, 96.97% of parent-child relationships improved.
  • Penfield served 824 children with developmental delays and disabilities through the Milwaukee County Birth-to-Three program.

OUR PROGRAMS

SPECIAL CARE NURSERY

  • The Special Care Nursery served 65 medically-fragile children with significant health concerns.
  • After receiving treatment, 24 children transitioned to appropriate learning environments-including special education and early education classrooms at Penfield, as well as Milwaukee Public Schools.

OUR PROGRAMS

BEHAVIOR CLINIC

  • The Behavior Clinic provided mental health counseling and therapy for 415 children with significant behavioral and/or emotional issues.
  • 94.62% of parents reported improvements in their children’s challenging behaviors after receiving in-home counseling sessions.
  • Since 2003, staff have made 41 presentations at local, state, regional and national conferences and published 23 refereed journal articles and two book chapters.

OUR PROGRAMS

OUTPATIENT THERAPY

  • Penfield’s outpatient therapy clinic works with individuals from birth to 21 who are in need of services due to accidents, surgeries or injuries.
  • In 2015, 81 children received acute, short-term or long-term speech, occupational and physical therapy services.

FAMILY SUPPORT

On December 5, Penfield held its annual Holiday Party for more than 900 guests! The event featured a variety of crafts, live music from Bill Downing and Mike Norris, a prize wheel run by Board member Al Araque and volunteers from Chase Bank, and a wrapped gift for each child donated by Kohl’s.

We are so thankful for the support from Chase Bank, Kohl’s Associates in Action, Marquette University, Milwaukee Bucks, NEWaukee, Northwestern Mutual, Pick ’n Save, Siam Express, Starbucks and WGIRLS Milwaukee. Your generosity helped make our Holiday Party a magical day for Penfield families!

Penfield offered 56 family events and programs, including parent education workshops, family celebrations, parent support groups, parent mentoring and school transition services. The combined attendance for all events was 2,654 children and family members.

KOHL’S CARES

Through the generous support of Kohl’s Cares, the Kohl’s Building Blocks program allows Penfield Children’s Center to support Milwaukee’s children.

2015 OUTCOMES

PENFIELD CHILDREN’S CENTER

2015 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Walton Family Foundation made a $250,000 planning grant to Penfield Montessori Academy – a school for all abilities – scheduled to open in September 2016.
  • The Zilber Foundation donated $250,000 (split over 2 years) and the Aurora Better Together Fund donated $100,000 to the Behavior Clinic.
  • Kohl’s Associates in Action participants volunteered 435 hours. In support of these efforts, Kohl’s donated $8,000. On Facilities Day, more than 85 Kohl’s team members spent a day remodeling, cleaning and repairing our center.
  • In honor of its 1-year anniversary of the “Yes2You” program, Kohl’s donated 500 winter coats to Penfield’s families.
  • The Behavior Clinic received a national endorsement from SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). The SAMHSA endorsement acknowledges the amazing work of the Behavior Clinic staff to provide mental health services to more than 400 central city Milwaukee children every year.
  • The 20th annual Croquet Ball raised more than $260,000. Three hundred guests celebrated Cramer-Krasselt, the 2015 Benefactor Award recipient and witnessed a surprise marriage proposal!
  • In collaboration with Kohl’s Cares, the Milwaukee Police and Fire Departments, Moms Demand Gun Sense in America, The Davidson Yell and Tell Foundation, Marquette School of Dentistry and Milwaukee Sanitation Department, Penfield hosted “Safety Day” for more than 250 Penfield children and community members.
  • Penfield created characters to support the Kohl’s Building Blocks Program including Wilder and his friends. We also published two children’s books, “Everyone Can Be a Friend” and “Wilder’s Fantastic Five” that teach about the unique abilities of all children.

PENFIELD CHILDREN’S CENTER

LOOKING AHEAD

Penfield Montessori Academy is a public Montessori school located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We offer classes starting at K3. We foster an inclusive environment in which children of all abilities can flourish together in multi-age classrooms. Click here to visit the Penfield Montessori Academy website.

This summer, Penfield will expand upon our existing penfieldbuildingblocks.org site by adding an interactive portion for children that focuses on celebrating differences. The site will include stories, games and videos that teach about how to be a good friend to children of all abilities.

The 20th annual Croquet Ball raised more than $260,000 for programming and services at Penfield Children’s Center. More than 300 guests celebrated Cramer-Krasselt, the 2015 Benefactor Award recipient, witnessed a surprise marriage proposal and honored our Penfield child of the night, Mady. Special thanks to our Event Chair, Phyllis King, Auction Co-Chairs, Julia Fennelly and Heidi Frank, and Sponsorship Chair, Al Araque.

During 2015, Penfield invested in a new electronic health record system – One ANCHOR (Access, Network, Connection, Holistic, Outcome, Record). One ANCHOR will more efficiently measure the developmental progress of the children we serve, collect data uniformly, reduce paperwork and verify our programming’s effectiveness. One ANCHOR will allow Penfield to combine multiple databases into one, and create a data collection system that will allow our agency to share outcomes and best practices.
